STERILIZATION OF RICE STRAW IN MUSHROOM CULTIVATION
STERILIZATION OF RICE STRAW MUSHROOM
We can grow mushrooms in several mediums such as -Rice straw , Cotton waste , Banana leaves , Sugarcane trash , Wheat , Water hyacinth etc .
RICE STRAW MUSHROOM :
Rice straw mushroom ( Volvariella volvacea ) has distinct flavour , pleasant test and very rich in protein content .
It is considered as one of the easiest way to cultivate mushrooms due to it's short production duration .
TYPES OF STERILIZATION
- Hot water Sterilization
- Cold water Sterilization
- Autoclaving
- Formaldehyde treatment
- Bavistin treatment
Among these Cold water Sterilization is the easiest to do .
REQUIREMENTS FOR COLD WATER STERILIZATION
- Tank
- Rice straw ( 1ft or 1.5ft )
- Clean water
- Lime
PROCEDURE:
- Tie 5-6 bundles together so that rice straw bundles won't float in the water .
- Fill the tank ( size of tank may vary according to the straw amount , for 50-60 bundles a tank of 5ft × 2ft will be enough ) with fresh and clean water.
- Add lime ( hydrated lime) to water ( 1-2g for 1 litre ).
- Mix it well , so that there will be even distribution of lime .
- Place the rice straw bundles in the tank in such a way that straws get enough of water.
- After placing the rice straw you can adjust the volume of water ( if required ) by adding more water .
- Let the straw soak water for 12-18 hrs ( in summer season ) and 8-10 hrs ( in rainy season ).
- After completion of soaking remove bundles from the tank and place the bundles near a wall making right angle to ground , so that excess water will drain out from the rice straw .
- Leave it for 1-2 hrs until the moisture in Straw is 60-70% ( the straw will be moist but no droplets will fall from it ).
- Once drainage is complete the substratum is ready for inoculation of mushroom spawn .
- Lime changes the pH of water .
- By adding lime we make the water alkaline which leads to killing of the contaminants.
- Use hydrated lime - Ca(OH)2 which is low in magnesium content .
- During application of lime use gloves , mask for safety issues .
